How We
Choose Projects
The LCC accepts clients from throughout Georgia and the Southeast. Georgia shares a number of similarities with its neighbors, both in terms of ecology and pressures on greenspace and many conservation issues cross state borders.
The clinic services are available during the UGA Law School’ academic year. Projects typically are completed by the end of a semester, although some projects may extend to 2 semesters, depending on the nature of the client matter. The clinic is not able to assist all clients, given the number of students and clinic process.
According to Georgia law and rules, students are not able to engage in the practice of law on their own. Thus, while students take the lead on the client’s matter and are the client’s point of contact, they will be supervised by a licensed attorney. Student work product will have undergone multiple rounds of review and revision with the director, and the final product will have been approved by her.

The clinic works with nonprofits and government agencies to address a wide variety of land
conservation issues, including drafting conservation easements and management plans;
analyzing conservation policy issues; drafting conservation ordinances for local governments;
contributing conservation guidebooks and solutions.
The clinic does not engage in litigation or provide litigation support.
The clinic is a teaching program and students take the lead on client matters. The students,
however, are directly supervised by the Clinic Director, and all work undergoes multiple drafts
and is reviewed by the Director. All final work product will be approved by the Director.
A client requests (via email, correspondence, or phone) assistance from the clinic director,
providing a description of the matter, client’s goals and the context. The clinic director
determines if the matter is appropriate for the clinic and the timing of the clinic’s work. The
Director will notify you by email or phone if the clinic accepts the client’s matter.
Once students are assigned to the client’s matter, a retainer agreement is executed and
students begin their work. The retainer agreement will set out the parameters of the project,
including a timeline for completion. Students assigned to the matter will arrange an initial
meeting with the client to review the client’s goals and obtain additional information as
needed.
